Choosy Moms Choose Blogs

As editor of the graphics.com network, I'm pleased and excited to announce the launch of design blogs on GraphicDesignForum, especially after a recent exchange between mom and me at last Sunday’s family dinner. Went something like this . . .

"So how's work, Steve?"

"Fine. Been spending a lot of time setting up blogs for one of our new sites."

"Hey, I know about bloggers. Everyone loves bloggers. They interviewed one on TV the other day. They're pretty good looking too!"

Wow! If mom, our lovable luddite, has a favorable (yet rigid) perception of blogs and bloggers, then I know we are on the right track here. Encouraging words, indeed. But, in the usual motherly fashion, she wasn't quite finished.

"So what are you doing with a blog?"

Hot food put a quick end to the conversation, but the point was loud and clear.

Don’t put a head shot on my blog, no one likes me . . . and . . . tell it like it is.

The designers here are certainly no stranger to telling it like it is. Unlike the forums, where many of them provide valuable responses to excellent questions, GDF blogs provide a platform to start debate and discussion of design issues of their choosing.

Combine these blogs with the forums and articles, and we’re almost guaranteed to become better designers, and that’s something even mom can be proud of.

Always a great feeling to have Mom supporting you! Even at my age (sssshhhhh 49, LOL) my mom is still in there encouraging my every move.

ha! I hear you Steve... while my family is happy for me that I am doing something I enjoy, they don't begin to understand what I actually *do*.

As attempts to explain tend to result in eyes glazing over, I content myself with showing them a finished piece once in a while so they can tell me it is "pretty".
